Marco: well I was in a local CD/record shop and the guy there told me that he's selling more vinyl than CDs. Also, he's had a lot of demand from youngsters for Fleetwood Mac and they simply will not believe him when he says FM was not always cool.

The other day I went to my local CD store, to order an album I used to own a long time ago, but I left behind.

Anyway, I was ready to explain that the band is called “Camel, C-A-L-L-E-D. You know, a prog rock band from England…”

When the attendant said very courteously that he knew, as he was also a fan and that the album (Rain Dances) was probably Camel’s best, I felt so surprised and grateful… That’s when I realized he was in his forties/fifties…

You know, some of these kids haven’t heard of Supertramp! Aghhh!

@Frymaster: Einstürzende Neubauten were very much a feature of my mid-80s music listening, along with Coil, SFOTW (and other Clint Ruin monikers) and many others!

Out of period but on point, IMO – einstruzende neubaten. For me, they hit all the points.

I remember being on a demolition job in Burlington, VT summer of 1990, I’m throwing demo’d 2×4′s down the chute into the dumpster, and the pieces are dated: August 1989.

A tearing down of new buildings, indeed.

@Brendan: I picked up Neu! 2 and Neu! 75 from Bravery, Repetition & Noise around the corner from our place, but that’s a bit of a trek for you!

As for The Model, I suppose you just had to be there at the time!

Not still singing praises of The Model?!? Worst song Kraftwerk ever got popular with, and this is coming from a massive fan… Anyway, thought you’d be interested in Kraftwerk’s continuing legacy – the Coldplay single “Talk” from a few years ago ripped off “Computer Liebe” (OK so they had permission, but any excuse to bash Coldplay must be taken), and longtime fan Beck has a very “Taschenrechner”-sounding track on “The Information”.
Of and if you know somewhere (you seem to) where I can *finally* (after over ten years of hunting) track down a copy of Neu! 2 and Neu! 75, I would jump for joy!

@Cyrus: Tago Mago is definitely a key Krautrock album. It was their third album, released in 1971 right in the middle of all of the Krautrock action.

Thanks for the potted history, very interesting. Would Can’s ‘Tago Mago’ stand up as one of the landmark albums of this type?
